Evening News, Portsmouth

The bout was part of a programme organised by Mr D C Keating and held in aid of the Gosport War Memorial Hospital.  The Evening News reported the following day that "Gosport boxing fans crowded the New Barracks Gymnasium last night to show their appreciation of one of the best programmes that has been staged on that side of the harbour for many a long day."

Mr. D. C. Keating, the promoter, had drawn together some excellent talent, and as the proceeds were for the Gosport War Memorial Hospital everyone was well satisfied.  The Mayor (Alderman S. Barnard Smith, J.P.), Chairman of the Hospital, expressed his thanks for the effort . . .

Interesting features were the presence of Jimmy Wilde (ex-flyweight champion of the world) and his Lonsdale Belt, whilst Bugler Lake (ex-champion of Europe) boxed a three-round exhibition fight with Fred Mills of Gosport.

The fight of the evening, a 10-round welter-weight clash between Stoker Reynolds and Herbie Fraser, of London, was a tough scrap, and some of the methods adopted by the London man did not find favour with the crowd.  Fraser challenged the Stoker to mix it, and the Portsmouth man was nothing loath.  There was a good deal of clinching, and generally the bout was not a pretty one.  The referee's verdict of a draw was not popular.

A ten-round bantam fight between Fred Bailey (Portsmouth) and Mick Milner (London) ended in a win for Bailey in the first round.  Milner went down to a right clip to the jaw, and although he rose he was obviously out on his feet and the referee stopped the fight.

A series of six-round contests resulted as follows:

LIGHT-WEIGHT

Tom Clarkson (Lee-on-the-Solent) beat Taff Lewis (Gosport) after a great fight.  They fought each other to a standstill.

Jock Mullen (Royal Clarence Yard) was given the decision against George Foster (Bedenham, Priddy's Hard) in the second round in a bout which threatened to become a wrestling match.

Seaman Clarke (Royal Navy) knocked out Bandsman Emery (Royal Marines) in the second round.  Emery had the best of the first round, but Clarke connected early in the second.

MIDDLE-WEIGHT

Roy Little (Gosport) beat Claude Grace (Portsmouth).  Little called the tune all through and won comfortably.

WELTER-WEIGHT

John Barnes (Gosport) beat George Wallis (Portsmouth) in a thrilling set-to.  Wallis packed a punch, but Barnes cleverly avoided damage and piled up points with a straight left.

BOYS' FOUR-ROUND BOUT

Wally Barnes¹ (Gosport) drew with Gordon Faithwaite (Portsmouth).  A sparkling bout between two game lads.
